„Empowering Socially Excluded Elderly within
Russian Minority in Estonia and Finland”

11.05.2011 Final Seminar in Estonia, Lillepaviljon

The project’s final seminar in Estonia took place in Lillepaviljon. The participants of focus groups, group forums and training were invited as well as persons who have been working in the project during the 2 year period. The results and findings of the project were introduced. Presentation and dissemination of the handbook “Eaka toeks” took place.

4.-5.05.2011 Final Seminar in Finland, Villa Vuosanta

The project’s final seminar in Finland took place in Villa Vuosanta, a beautiful cottage by the sea. Finnish experts and coordinator presented a summary of their findings and results of the project. Several different workshops took place where the trainers introduced some methods what are used to help elderly people to cope and take care of themselves more smoothly and efficiently.

4.04.2011, Management Group Meeting and Joint Development Workshop, Tallinn

Final version of the model was agreed, last minute details of the project final seminars in Helsinki and Tallinn and also the main ideas of the handbooks for elderly and the study book for students were introduced and discussed. Study visit to the Self-Help and Advisory Center for senior Citizens took place.

19.-20.01.2011, Management Group Meeting and Joint Development Workshop, Helsinki

EMEL management group gathered in Helsinki for 2 days to discuss the project’s last activities – printing handbooks, organizing the final seminars, agreeing about the final version of the model. There were several experts invited to the Joint Development Workshop to talk about new trends in immigrant elderly care in Finland. Study visit to Elderly Care Center in Kontula took place.

Oct-Nov 2010 Group Forums

24 group forums (12 in both countries) were organized in order to introduce the methodology and empowering model and receive feedback to these documents from the elderly, home care workers and relatives of elderly.

21.10.2010 Management Group Meeting and Joint Development Workshop, Tallinn

Management Group Meeting and Joint Development Workshop took place. The joint training on 4th of November 2010 in Helsinki and project final seminars in both countries were agreed. The joint model was discussed and the decision was made to print extra leaflet with the final model.

29.09.2010 Central Baltic Showcase Conference, Riga

Project experts, coordinators and project manager took part of the Showcase Conference in Riga. Project had a stand on the exhibition. Lot of new ideas and contacts were gathered.

10.09.-4.11.2010 Training for the workers with elderly people

Training for the workers with elderly people took place in Tallinn and Helsinki (3 days separately in both countries and 2 days jointly in Helsinki). The empowering model was introduced to the trainees and a lot of best practices were exchanged between both countries during the training.

6.-7.05.2010, Management Group Meeting and Joint Development Workshop, Helsinki

Steering Group and Management Group meetings and Joint Development Workshop took place in Helsinki. The second budget change and upcoming events (group forums, training for the workers with elderly people, Showcase Conference in Riga) in the autumn were discussed. There was discussion over the Joint Model on the Joint Development Workshop and study visit to Kustaankartano was organized.

8.-9.3.2010, Training for the group forum leaders, Tallinn

The training for the group forum leaders conducted by the professional trainer from Inscape Baltic took place. There were both the Estonian and Finnish participants on the training. In two days they got skills and knowledge for how to lead group forums and make them successful. They had also possibility to learn from each other and share the experiences.

4.3.2010, Joint Development Workshop, Tallinn

Estonian experts gave an Introduction to the existing models, discussion over the models was held – what are the advantages and disadvantages of them. Preparations and themes tackled during the training in autumn were discussed, as well as the final preparations for the training for the group forum leaders (8.-9.03.2010) were made.

24.02.2010, Seminar of publishing the diploma studies of the DIAK students, Helsinki

Five diploma studies based on the focus group interviews made by ten students from DIAK were presented.

14.1.2010, Management group meeting, Joint development workshop, Tallinn

The main activities in 2010 (training for group forum leaders in March in TPC, group forums and trainings for elder care activists ) were discussed. Mrs Anne Ehasalu gave a presentation of the joint report which was compiled on the basis of the focus group interviews in Estonia and Finland. Joint Development Workshop took place in Mustamäe Social Center. The director of Mustamäe Social Center organized a tour in the facility introducing the different possibilities it offers. The participants were able to exchange their views and ask questions in an unofficial environment.

6.11.2009, Joint Development Workshop, Helsinki

Nursing students from DIAK gave an overview of the Results of Focus-group interwievs in Helsinki. Discussion about the results by using Aquarium method was leaded by Finnish experts Marianna Zotow and Eva Laine. Learning café was held in order to share experiences about working with elderly within Russian minority in Estonia and Finland.

10.-11.09.2009, Management Group Meeting and Joint Development Workshop, Tallinn

The project communication plan was discussed – what has been done already (articles, project leaflets, homepage) and what will be the next activities in order to ensure the wider public to be aware of the project. Ms Monika Haukanõmm (Ministry of Social Affairs) gave an overview of the policy in Estonia concerning the senior citizens. Mrs Lea Viires spoke about the Self Help and Advisory Center for Senior Citizens and its activities. Ms Anne Ehasalu and Ms Maiu Kauber gave an overview of the results of the focus group intervies conducted in Estonia.

May-June 2009, Focus group meetings, Tallinn

Four focus group meetings took place, leaded by lecturers and students of Tallinn Pedagogical College. The participants were interviewed in order to find out the main needs and problems of the project target group. The meetings were very successful and served their purpose.

11.05.2009, Management group meeting, Helsinki

Project management group meeting and joint development workshop took place. There were two speakers from other projects – project coordinator Eeva Rönkkö, Yhdessä- hanke, Eläkeläiset ry, Helsinki, and project worker Marjo Eerola, Maahanmuuttajavanhukset-projekti, Palvelutaloyhdistys Koskenrinne ry, Kotka. They shared their experiences from their projects, and gave some ideas and tips of good practices.

6.-7.04.2009, Kick-off meeting, Tallinn

The first official meeting (Kick-off meeting) of the project took place. All the main activities during the project period as well as project website and communication plan (leaflets, articles, handbook) were discussed. The first activities will be focus group meetings in both countries. The goal of them is to find out the main problems and needs of the project target group (Russian minority). The topics were proposed and agreed by the project experts.
Project manager introduced the project manual.
Steering group meeting took place on April 7th. Project manager made a brief overview of the tasks of steering group and project plan. Liina Tuulik (coordinator of the Joint Technical Secretariat) gave an overview of the subsidy contract.
Steering group and project management group discussed about the budget and agreed to make the first budjet change.
