„Empowering Socially Excluded Elderly within Russian Minority in Estonia and Finland”

Project target groups:

• socially excluded elderly (aged 65 and over) within Russian minority in Finland and Estonia;
• personnel of day-care centers and other elder care activists who are responsible of empowering socially excluded elderly within Russian minority;
• home care workers of socially excluded elderly within Russian minority;
• relatives of socially excluded elderly within Russian minority (who are daily taking care of them);
• wider public.

General objective of the current project is to increase the active participation in society and wellbeing of elderly people within Russian minority in Finland and Estonia, through joint development and promotion of an empowering model, based on self-care theories.

The specific objectives of the current project are:

• to map the main needs and problems of elderly within Russian minority in Finland and Estonia;
• to develop jointly an empowering model, for socially excluded elderly within Russian minority, based on the needs/ problems analysis and self-care theories;
• to promote and disseminate jointly the empowering model among different target groups.

In order to achieve project objectives, the following activities will be carried out:

• Mapping the main needs and problems of elderly within Russian minority and comparing the situations in Estonia and Finland:
  • 3 joint development workshops;
  • 8 focus groups with elderly;
  • a joint report.
• Joint development of the empowering model for socially excluded elderly within Russian minority:
  • 2-days training for the group forum leaders;
  • a joint 40 hour training program for elder care activists;
  • piloting the training program;
  • 24 group forums for elderly, the relatives of the socially excluded elderly and home care workers;
  • analyzing the results and adjusting the final version of the empowering model to the conditions of both countries.
• Promotion and dissemination of the empowering model and self-care strategies::
  • different leaflets;
  • a handbook for elderly people;
  • articles for different target groups in the professional magazines of elderly care and newspapers/ magazines for Russian elderly;
  • press releases;
  • a project web-site.
